The driving force behind this project is to begin a conversation on whether our curriculum is preparing our students to be active and knowledgeable citizens in the global community. This blog is designed as a tool to help us share ideas, engage in discussion, and prepare out students to be leaders in the future.
Take a look at the famous Saul Steinberg New Yorker cover: A New Yorker's view of the world. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:The_New_Yorker,_1 976-03-29,_Cover_ (View_of_the_World_from_ 9th_Avenue,_priced_and_dated).PNG
This speaks to geographic illiteracy. Given that some of our politicians, who have been elevated to national exposure, don't have a good sense of geography, it is a critically important subject.
Also, it is an interesting exercise to ask folks to draw a map of the US as accurately as possible...including the state boundaries.
I did a research project on this and the results were interesting.
