The driving force behind this project is to begin a conversation on whether our curriculum is preparing our students to be active and knowledgeable citizens in the global community. This blog is designed as a tool to help us share ideas, engage in discussion, and prepare out students to be leaders in the future.
"Although this generation is highly tech-savvy, they don't understand the pros and cons of such technology on society and democracy."
Sometimes the amount of information that is thrown at us by the media can be very overwhelming. Students often do not even see the issue they only see the position. Students need to be shown how to sift through and compare their sources. They need to narrow the story or the sound byte to the issue and then form their opinion on the issue not on the position.
I think a crucial element of understanding media literacy is to understand the mediums from which our students are obtaining media. It is important for teachers to be able to show students how to use different technologies to achieve the objectives of the Big Five. Teachers must be trained in these new technologies and also be "tech savvy."
Also, as there is certainly a value in using wikis and blogs for the purpose of discussion I think that there is also something to be said for the human interaction that occurs with in class discussion. I fear that in this technology may take us away from human interaction that is powerful and important.
